Manchester United have a big rebuilding job on their hands as Ruben Amorim tries to turn the Red Devils’ fortunes around.
With the January transfer window now in full swing, Manchester United could well look to make some signings in order to strengthen their squad.
One deal has reportedly been struck already, with Paraguayan talent Diego Leon seemingly bound for Old Trafford in the summer.
Now, GiveMeSport has reported that the Red Devils are expecting to be offered a forward who was previously deemed “one of the best strikers in the world”.
Manchester United expect to be offered Jonathan David
The player in question is Lille and Canada star Jonathan David, who has been in fine form for club and country over the years.
According to Dean Jones, Man United are expected to be offered David as they contemplate increasing their firepower after a season of struggles in front of goal.
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee only have 11 goals between them in all competitions this season, including just five in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, David has 11 Ligue 1 goals for Lille this season and 17 in all competitions, along with five assists.
David has long been a fixture on the transfer rumour mill and 2025 could finally be the year that he leaves, due to his contract expiring in the summer.
As well as Man United, the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Newcastle have been linked with David.
What David could bring to Man United
is a prolific striker, with 101 goals and 23 assists to his name from 210 Lille outings, plus 31 goals and 16 assists from 59 caps for Canada.
Indeed, Canadian sports expert Tony Marinaro previously described the reported Arsenal target as "one of the best strikers in the world".
Meanwhile, former Canada assistant manager Steven Caldwell said David is world-leading in several aspects.
"Very good finisher, but in the red of Canada he's been a bit hesitant in front of goal," Caldwell told Harry De Cosemo on YouTube.
"He's doing a lot of work off the ball as well, he's a real team player, Jonathan David. He's one of the best defensive forwards I've ever worked with.
"The cut-off, the easy passes into midfield and things like that are outstanding.
"He's a good presser, he understands cues when to press, he's exceptional at that, as good as anybody in the world, I would say.
"And then the other side of his game is that he's a stocky-looking guy but he's quicker than he looks. He can shift when he wants, and for Lille he's quite prolific.
"Normally, when he's in front of the goal, he makes it count."
