Newcastle United’s summer transfer window didn’t really go to plan.

Newcastle missed out on signing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who was Eddie Howe’s number one target for most of the window.

They also failed to bring in a right-winger, which was another position Howe was keen to strengthen, so there’s certainly work to be done in the January transfer window.

With that said, Newcastle are already eyeing a midfield target on the content.

Newcastle interested in signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson

According to TNT Sports in Brazil, Newcastle United are eyeing Atalanta midfielder Ederson ahead of the winter transfer window.

Premier League rivals Manchester United are also considering a move for the 25-cap Brazil international, who is thought to be valued at around £50m.

United reportedly submitted a £42m for Ederson over the summer but Atalanta knocked back that offer and they instead signed Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.

Whether they return with a second offer in January remains to be seen but the Premier League duo are thought to be in the driving seat ahead of Barcelona and Juventus as Ederson is keen to make a move to England.

Ederson profile

Ederson typically operates as a box-to-box midfielder and according to FBref, he is of a similar profile to Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana.

The 25-year-old ranks in the top 22 per cent for progressive passes per 90 across Europe, so evidently, he’s a forward-thinking midfielder, rather than a tempo-dictator.

If Newcastle were to land his signature, it’d be regarded as a real coup, especially considering the interested parties.
