West Ham United have been fairly busy in the opening weeks of the transfer window as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of next season.

The Hammers have already made two signings, with winger Luis Guilherme joining the Premier League club from Palmeiras and goalkeeper Wes Foderingham arriving on a free transfer.

However, West Ham don’t look like they’re done yet, and plenty of players continue to be linked with a move to the London Stadium.

Now, according to a report from GiveMeSport, the Hammers have made contact over a South American midfielder who has played alongside Lionel Messi and has a “superb future ahead” of him.

West Ham enquire about Inter Miami talent Diego Gomez

The player in question is Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez, who has also been capped at senior level for Paraguay.

According to GiveMeSport, West Ham have enquired about the 21-year-old and are considering a move for the exciting talent.

However, the Hammers are said to be lagging behind Brighton in the race for Gomez, as he’s reportedly keen on joining them after they submitted a bid.

That said, the Seagulls’ bid has apparently fallen well short of Inter Miami’s valuation. They are seeking around £20million for their player, added the report.

This could allow West Ham and other suitors to swoop in, get the MLS club’s approval, and potentially turn Gomez’s head.

Who is West Ham target Diego Gomez?

Diego Gomez is a 21-year-old Paraguayan midfielder who has made quite a name for himself in the MLS.

He came through the ranks at Paraguayan outfit Libertad and joined Inter Miami for a reported £2million fee last summer.

Gomez has gone from strength to strength in Florida, registering 25 appearances, four goals and three assists to date.

As per Transfermarkt, he has played alongside Lionel Messi 19 times.

He has also won seven caps for Paraguay and captained his nation’s Under-23s to Olympic qualification earlier this year.

Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig has described Gomez as a “combative” and “high-quality” box-to-box midfielder with a “superb future ahead“.

Kulig also compared Gomez to Porto, Inter Milan and Colombia icon Fredy Guarin.

Gomez looks like a top talent, so it will be exciting to see whether West Ham intensify their interest in him over the coming weeks.
