Timo Werner earned a rare start for Tottenham Hotspur last weekend as he featured in the 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke buoyed Tottenham onto a statement victory, but Werner failed to make an impression as he fluffed his lines consistently in front of goal.

Starting on the left flank in the absence of Son Heung-min, the German international didn’t have his shooting boots on and missed a series of chances across the game, although it didn’t come back to haunt the away side as they took the lead in the third minute.

Spurs travel to Hungary to take on Ferencvaros in a UEFA Europa League group stage clash and it remains to be seen if Werner keeps his spot in the team.

And if reports from England are to be believed, Ange Postecoglou has already decided what to do with the German international.

According to Give Me Sport, Werner is expected to retain his spot in the starting XI, having also started against Manchester United and Coventry City in the EFL Cup.

Postecoglou views the RB Leipzig loanee as an important member of his squad and is eager to give him another opportunity to prove his worth.

A trip to Hungary to face Ferencváros presents Werner with a fantastic opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet, with the 28-year-old yet to score or assist for Tottenham this season.

The report also states that Postecoglou believes Werner will play a key role for his team this season as a useful squad option as opposed to someone who will start every game, which is a reassuring sign for the player despite his poor form.

Werner can take a lead out of Brennan Johnson’s book

At the start of the season, Johnson simply couldn’t buy himself a goal and looked desperately devoid of confidence.

However, Postecoglou opted to keep faith in the Welsh international, who has scored in each of his last four appearances in all competitions for Tottenham.

A similar run could be in the offing for Werner, who just needs to find his feet in front of goal as he is getting himself into good positions.
