William Osula made his full debut for Newcastle in Tuesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon at St James’ Park.
The 21-year-old had only been given seven minutes of football by Eddie Howe since his £10m move from Sheffield United back in August, which came from the bench during September’s 3-1 defeat at Fulham.
In truth, there has been little need to throw the youngster straight in, with Newcastle performing well and sitting seventh in the Premier League.

However, the Denmark U21 international was handed a full debut against AFC Wimbledon, doing enough to help the Magpies book a spot in the fourth round.

It is believed that Newcastle insiders feel Osula has the “raw ingredients” needed to become a “fearsome” forward, although there is not complete optimism that this £10m deal will prove to be smart business.
The Athletic add that Newcastle insiders also hold the opinion that the man from Aarhus was a gamble of a signing – despite his potential – given the fact he has only scored eight goals in 54 appearances in senior football.

Newcastle fans will need to be patient with Osula, as he is a project player in every sense of the phrase.
As SofaScore shows, the Danish striker was the lowest rated Newcastle player of those to last the entire 90 minutes, receiving a rating of just 6.8 for his efforts.
Osula made only seven passes in those 90 minutes and missed one big chance, but it was not all doom and gloom as he won two ground duels, had one shot on target and made one key pass, putting himself about well on a night where he was clearly determined to impress.
There could soon be added competition for the Dane, as Newcastle hold talks to sign Jonathan David on a free transfer in 2025.
Of course, some Newcastle fans will expect a bit more from a £10m signing against a League Two side, although by the sounds of it, those inside St James’ Park believe Osula has star potential, so he deserves patience.
