Southampton have struggled to adapt to life back in the Premier League.

Saints are winless in their opening seven games and have taken just one point from a possible 21 – which has put Russell Martin under huge pressure.

Martin has been persistent in his possession-based brand of football and isn’t willing to adapt for certain games.

That’s led his side to give the ball away countless times when trying to play out from the back – to the frustration of many supporters.

Southampton ready to sack Russell Martin if he loses to Leicester

According to TEAMtalk, Southampton chiefs are ready to sack Russell Martin if his side suffers defeat to Leicester City after the international break.

Saints are prepared to make a change in the dugout as they’re losing patience with the barren run of results.

They are the lowest scorers in the league and look like near-certains to go down under Martin’s philosophy – which just doesn’t align with the quality of his squad at this level.

The former Swansea City manager is reluctant to go away from the style that took Southampton up via the play-offs.

That stubborness looks as though it’ll cost him.

Southampton should target Michael Carrick if Russell Martin leaves

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick would be a natural replacement for Martin as his brand of football isn’t too dissimilar.

However, Carrick is more adaptable plus he’s already worked with Cameron Archer – who was Saints’ statement buy in the summer.

The former Manchester United assistant is unquestionably one of the best managers in the Championship and looks destined for a career at the elite level.
