Newcastle are unlikely to complete a deal to sign Richarlison from Tottenham in the January transfer window due to his lofty asking price.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected at the club, explained that the club are set to hold out for a £33million fee to let the forward leave.

The 27-year-old’s contract is not set to expire until 2027, meaning the club are in a strong position to dictate his future, and they are keen to sell for the highest possible price.

As a result, Newcastle are expected to be priced out of the move in January, although there remains the possibility that a deal could be explored at the end of the season.

Robinson insisted that Richarlison would be a good fit for Eddie Howe’s side as a result of his ability to play across the front three or behind a central striker.

However, since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at Spurs in 2023, he has scored 13 goals and provided five assists in 38 across all competitions and has missed 31 games through injury.

As a result, clubs are thought to be reluctant to pay his full asking price despite a feeling at Tottenham that his time at the club may be coming to an end.

Tottenham are keen to make back a large portion of the £50million initial fee they spent on the Brazilian in 2022, but Newcastle are not planning to spend big in January given their financial situation.

Robinson has raised questions about Spurs’ valuation given his issues since joining from Everton, as he insisted they are pricing clubs out of a potential deal.

He seems like the type of player they would be looking for,” he told Football Insider.

“You talk about that right-wing position, players that play behind the striker and can also play as a nine.

“The move to Tottenham hasn’t worked, he hasn’t played enough football or scored enough goals.

“I heard the other day that Tottenham will hold out for £33million for him. They’re not going to get £33million for a 27-year-old who’s hardly played in the last 12 months.

“For Newcastle, he’s the type of player who would be a good fit.

“His contract is until 2027, but the fact Tottenham will hold out for top-whack and won’t let him go on the cheap, that’s not a January deal for me.

“I can see his time at Tottenham coming to an end, but that’s a summer move and I think Tottenham will price him out of a deal by wanting that money for him.”
