Wrexham have been told to ‘stay in England’ after discussions over a place in the Welsh League Cup.

As it stands, Wrexham – along with Cardiff City, Swansea and Newport County – play in the English league system which means that they also compete in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and when applicable, the Football League Trophy.

However discussions have been held regarding a change that would see the quartet compete in Welsh cup competitions which would offer them a better chance of playing European Football.

That is because the winner of the Welsh League Cup qualifies for the following season’s Europa Conference League.

One of the key aims of the proposals – titled Prosiect Cymru – would be to improve Wales’ standing in Uefa’s association club coefficients.

But while it would be good news for Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and possibly Wales’ standing in Europe, it would mean sides includingThe New Saints, Caernarfon Town, Connah's Quay Nomads and Bala Town would face a tougher challenge to qualify.

The proposal hasn’t gone down with the Cymru Premier’s all-time top goalscorer Marc Lloyd Williams who believes that Hollywood-owned Wrexham can’t ‘have their cake an eat it too’.

He told BBC Radio Wales: “I am not sure what the [Cymru Premier] clubs think about it.

"For me, the four clubs made the decision to play in England, so stay in England.

“Don't try and take those European spots off the Cymru Premier teams. It is their bread and butter, week in, week out.”

Williams added: “Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham and Newport are in the Football League and the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

“They have got a chance to play Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal with a home tie and get big crowds in.

"Just because TNS (The New Saints) have qualified for Europe, it doesn't necessarily mean that Cardiff or Swansea or Wrexham or Newport would.

"For me, you can't be having your cake and eating it. They have made their decision and I would be against them coming in."

Wrexham are already increasing their profile in world football thanks to the ownership of Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

After earning back-to-back promotions to take them from the National League to League One, the Dragons are firmly on track to go up once again.

Wrexham are currently second in the third tier with promotion this season taking them just one division away from the Premier League.

While Newport play in League Two, both Cardiff and Swansea already play their football in the Championship and have a recent history of life in England’s top flight.
