Chelsea delivered an encouraging performance at Anfield on Sunday despite suffering a loss against Liverpool.

Enzo Maresca and his players were warmly received by the travelling Chelsea fans after the 2-1 defeat, with supporters clearly proud of the fight on show from the Blues.

The result left Chelsea sixth in the Premier League after eight games.

That is a decent position to be in having already faced Manchester City and Liverpool this season, although Robbie Savage believes the Blues will actually finish a little higher.

Robbie Savage tips Chelsea to finish fourth in the Premier League

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, the 50-year-old backed Chelsea to finish fourth this season.

Savage said: “I think they’ll finish fourth, as I said at the start of the season.”

Not since the 2021/22 campaign have Chelsea finished inside the top four, ending up third in the Premier League that season under Thomas Tuchel.

In that period of time, Newcastle and Aston Villa have actually qualified for the UEFA Champions League as Chelsea stumble around in the lower regions of the Premier League, but there does seem to be something positive happening under Maresca right now after a bright display at Anfield.

Arne Slot was impressed with Cole Palmer and also spoke highly of Chelsea’s performance as he too backed the Blues to finish inside the top four this term.

On another day, the west Londoners could have even left Merseyside with a result, as the ball appeared to hit Curtis Jones on the hand before Levi Colwill fouled the Liverpool No.17 and conceded a penalty.

Enzo Maresca still has some decisions to make

Despite some positive signs, Maresca – who felt Liverpool fans influenced John Brooks on Sunday – still has a few creases he needs to iron out.

For a start, Chelsea can surely find a better goalkeeper than Robert Sanchez, who was far from a calm figure in between the sticks on Sunday.

Jamie Carragher even called Sanchez “scared” after the Spaniard appeared to pull out from challenging Jones before the winning goal was poked home.

Furthermore, Maresca needs to utilise Christopher Nkunku more effectively – the France international came on against Liverpool as a touchline winger, when a more central role suits him much better.

Nevertheless, the Italian is certainly building something substantial at Chelsea, based on what we’re seeing on the pitch.
