Liverpool could land the “biggest result in the history of football” amid the contract situations around their top stars, according to Paul Merson.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all now able to negotiate terms for a pre-contract with any club as they all have less than six months on their contract.

Despite the Reds being confident they can agree deal for Salah, he's admitted that the two parties are "far away" from any progress, and Merson criticised the club for getting into this situation.

He had his say on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday to indicate it would be a giant coup to only lose one (12.24pm): “I’m fed up with it. Everyone’s going ‘Ah amazing how well they’re doing, their contracts are up’. They’re on £300,000-a-week!

"They’re three of the best players in the world of football in their positions, they are gonna get a club.

“They’re not a League Two player whose contract’s run out and they’ve got to go and get another club next season, these are getting a club whatever happens! God forbid they don’t go and break their leg. Because then they won’t, but as long as they don’t get injured.

“Everybody keeps on going to me ‘Oh it’s amazing what they’re doing, they’re contracts are up and they’re playing like they’re playing’…

“I’m like ‘Oh my God!’ I tell you what, if Liverpool were where Man City are now they would be getting pelters. Because they’re winning every week everything’s great.

“If they can sign two out of the three, Liverpool, they’ve had the biggest result in the history of football. In the history of football.”

Liverpool can't lose key players in this new era

It's been a season to remember for Arne Slot as his Liverpool side tops both the Premier League and the Champions League standings.

Salah has been instrumental, delivering incredible form. He has racked up 20 goals and 17 assists in just 26 games across all competitions.

Alexander-Arnold has also experienced a resurgence, with fans convinced he's staying after his recent standout performances and celebratory displays.

However, if Merson's proves accurate and only two players re-sign, it's likely to be Van Dijk and Salah.

The Liverpool hierarchy remain confident about securing a deal for their captain. But negotiations with Alexander-Arnold have yet to show any positive developments.

This is a new era and a fresh start under Slot, who has proven this is far more than just a managerial bounce.

It would reflect poorly on the club if any of their top players were to leave, even if two extend their contracts. They should not be in this position in the first place.

What the Dutch coach likely wants is for his team to block out the noise. Liverpool face bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday (5 January). A win would put the Merseyside club eight points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand.
