Liverpool aren’t giving Conor Bradley any guarantees that he’ll succeed Trent Alexander-Arnold as their first-choice right-back, sources have told Football Insider.
Alexander-Arnold’s inevitable exit to Real Madrid has been agreed by both parties as he prepares to leave Anfield on a free transfer this summer, and the Reds are moving quickly to line up his successor.
Bradley is seen my many Liverpool fans as the natural choice to step up into Alexander-Arnold’s role, having deputised effectively throughout this season and arguably been a better natural fit at right-back.
However, sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool are planning on delving into the transfer market to bring in competition for Bradley; the Northern Irishman having been unlucky with injuries.
While Bradley will hope he’s the first option to start on the right of the Reds’ defence next term, Liverpool have their sights set on Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as the man to succeed Alexnader-Arnold.
Former Manchester United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that he doesn’t see Frimpong’s attack-minded style fitting in the Premier League, but Liverpool remain convinced.
Liverpool let down by Conor Bradley injury record
Liverpool will have to fight off arch-rivals Manchester United for Frimpong’s signature, but a recently-won Premier League title and guaranteed Champions League football should swing things in their favour.
Bradley would indeed be given the first crack at replacing Alexander-Arnold, but his injury worries may see Liverpool higher-ups doubt whether he can step up to the plate week-in, week-out.
As a result, it’s no surprise to see the Reds identify Frimpong as an ideal replacement after Alexander-Arnold’s exit, though the pair also have question marks over their defensive capabilities in common.
Frimpong pursuit to spark summer of change at Liverpool
Alexander-Arnold’s departure is the blue touchpaper of a window which will see Arne Slot re-shape the Reds into his image, as he looks to build on a soon-to-be-confirmed league title in his debut season.
The likes of Caoimhin Kelleher are also expected to depart Anfield, while Virgil van Dijlk and Mohamed Salah’s futures remain up in the air, having run down their contracts similarly to Alexander-Arnold.
Football Insider reported on 27 March that the Reds see Newcastle’s Alexander Isak as an attainable target in the coming months, and with a central defender also on the agenda, expect a busy summer window which could still end with Conor Bradley as Liverpool’s first-choice right-back.
