Liverpool will have to pay upwards of £60million if they want to sign Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the 25-year-old has now emerged among their leading targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

There is a belief that he would come in and immediately improve the starting XI, while he could also be the long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk, 33, has yet to agree to a new contract at Anfield and will leave the club in June as things stand as Liverpool have not made progress in contract talks.

However, Inter Milan are not keen to lose their star man this summer and view him as a crucial part of Simone Inzaghi’s long-term plans.

Bastoni’s current contract is set to run until 2028, placing Inter in a strong position to see off interest while he is not expected to push for a move.

Liverpool identify Alessandro Bastoni among top targets

Arne Slot’s side are eyeing a move to sign a new defender this summer after Football Insider revealed Liverpool will sign a centre-back regardless of Van Dijk’s future.

Bastoni’s age, experience and quality have ticked a number of boxes and placed him firmly among the Reds’ top targets for the position.

This comes alongside interest in Crystal Palace’ Marc Guehi and Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen.

The centre-back has made 41 appearances for the Serie A leaders so far this season and has established himself as a crucial player for both his club and national sides.

Bastoni has also attracted interest from Tottenham, who have also been long-term admirers of the centre-back after scouts spent time tracking his progress in Italy.

Arne Slot could lose several key players in summer transfer twist

Liverpool’s attempts to sign new players this summer comes amid growing concern that they could lose a number of their current crop of first-team stars.

Football Insider revealed that Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s contract talks have stalled as the Reds are reluctant to meet their demands.

Alongside those star players, the likes of Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Ibrahima Konate have also been linked with moves away from Anfield.

Meanwhile, Paul Robinson told Football Insider that Trent Alexander-Arnold has signed for Real Madrid and will leave the club in June.
