Chris Rigg is already in huge demand ahead of the summer transfer window but Tottenham only have an outside chance of signing him, sources have told Football Insider.
Rigg’s future looks set to lie away from Sunderland next season – particularly if they fail to win promotion from the Championship – and Tottenham are one of several clubs keen on signing the 17-year-old.
However, sources have told Football Insider that Spurs are yet to launch an official bid for the Black Cats midfielder, with West Ham and Everton both sniffing around the Stadium of Light ahead of the summer.
Manchester United’s former chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that they’re one of several top clubs who have watched Rigg’s exploits for Sunderland, who are desperate to keep hold of the teenager.
Remaining in the Championship next season will likely consign Sunderland to selling this summer, and Rigg appears destined to be a Premier League player next season regardless of the club he’s at.
Sunderland, however, are bracing themselves for offers from sides keen to pluck Rigg from Wearside, and while Tottenham aren’t currently at the front of the queue, that could change come the summer.
Chris Rigg transfer makes sense within Tottenham policy
Sunderland appear to be outsiders in the Championship promotion race given the pace set by Sheffield United, Leeds and Burnley at the upper end of the second-tier, and the vultures are circling as a result.
Tottenham have had a season to forget which leaves Ange Postecoglou on the brink of the sack, but two undoubted successes have been the signings of teenage midfielders Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.
Fellow youngsters like Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-hyeok are further signs of Spurs’ youth-first transfer policy, and it’s no surprise to see Rigg on their radar after Gray followed a similar path at Leeds.
With fellow Premier League clubs tracking Rigg’s every move in red and white over the course of this term, Spurs risk falling further down the pecking order if they don’t act with an early summer approach.
Tottenham transfer outlook could change ahead of vital summer
Although Spurs – or any one of the other 19 Premier League clubs – will be remiss if they miss out to one of their rivals for Rigg’s signature, they already have a plethora of youngsters ready to make the step up.
Luka Vuskovic won’t arrive through the doors until he turns 18 midway through next season, yet with such a significant focus on youth, Tottenham have arguably been guilty of neglecting the here and now.
Here and now, Rigg is a top-class player at Championship level, but if Sunderland manage to squeeze top dollar out of the club which does sign him, Spurs may be glad they have a sizeable chunk of their transfer budget left to spend elsewhere.
