TBR Football can exclusively confirm that talks between West Ham United and Graham Potter have hit a stumbling block.

The Hammers are currently in the process of finding a replacement for Julen Lopetegui in wake of the club’s poor form this season.

West Ham have decided to replace Lopetegui, a decision that David Sullivan has now made in order to try and turn the club’s fortunes around.

West Ham vice chairman Karren Brady is understood to be pushing for Graham Potter to take charge of the club.

However, the Hammers are believed to have said something to Potter in negotiations that he sees as an issue were he to take the job.

West Ham would make Graham Potter long-term decision in summer

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that West Ham have spoken to three candidates in the last week.

We revealed that former AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca had been spoken to, whilst Frenchman Christophe Galtier – currently in charge of Al-Duhail in Qatar – also talked with Sullivan.

However, as we confirmed, Potter has long been the leading candidate to come in and he agreed terms back in December on a deal to come in until the end of the season.

We can now reveal that Potter is still willing to come in on a deal until the end of the season, but he wants a trigger for a longer deal to be included that is based on performances.

However, West Ham have insisted during talks that they will make the decision come the summer and this is an issue for Potter.

Everton have also been linked with Potter, but West Ham is understood to be his first choice at this point with Brady leading the charge to land him.

But as it stands, talks have stalled, meaning Lopetegui remains in charge despite the club publicly talking to his potential replacements.

What Potter has said about taking another job

Speaking to the Telegraph last September, Potter revealed that he was ready to take on a new managerial role after leaving Chelsea in April 2023.

He said: "It still has to be the right thing, but I'm excited for it. I'm excited to hear what the opportunities are and I'll take each one and judge it on its merits.

"International management is a different rhythm and there are pluses for that. It's more intense when it's on, but you've got a bit more breathing space in between.

"It's nothing that I've ruled out, but at the same time I do like the day-to-day bit of working with the players and being in at the club and trying to build and make a difference."
