Southampton fans 'pulled awkward trick on Russell Martin' before he was sacked

Russell Martin was on the end of an “awkward” interation with Southampton fans during the 5-0 defeat to Tottenham that led to his sacking, Jay Harris reported.
After weeks of speculation about his position at St Mary’s defeat to Spurs proved to be the final straw for the 38-year-old at the club.
Before he departed though, Saints fans got one final dig in at their beleaguered manager during that defeat to Ange Postecoglou’s side.
As noted by The Athletic reporter Harris, one “awkward moment” late on in the match saw Southampton fans urge Martin to give them a wave, only to boo him when he obliged.

Going into the start of the campaign, Martin’s stock with the club’s supporters ought to have been rather high after guiding them to promotion last season.
However, his persistence with tactics which saw his side consistently play out from the back, to their own detriment in the Premier League caused a great deal of frustration among the fanbase.
In the wake of that, Martin seemingly took aim at the Southampton following recently with some of his comments.
That will not have helped the relationship between the two parties, so it is perhaps no surprise that those supporters had a dig of their own here.
It is the sort of circumstance that does seem to indicate that a parting of the ways was in the best interests of all involved.
But while Martin can now move on, Southampton will be left to wonder about just who will be coming in to replace him at St Mary’s, and whether it will be too late to save their Premier League status.
