Chelsea have cut their overall wage bill by around £40million after their financial results have been revealed for 2023-24.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that is far less than the £100million figure people had previously been speculating.

Deloitte's 2025 Money League revealed Chelsea's overall revenue fell from £513million in 2022-23 to £469million last season.

The London giants' commercial revenue increased from £210million to £225million across the same period.

Meanwhile, their wage bill dropped from £404million to £334million in 2023-24 as Stamford Bridge chiefs look to bring down their costs.

Chelsea wage cut is step in the right direction

Borson insisted it is a step in the right direction for Chelsea following their previous heavy spending.

He told Football Insider: "They appear to have got through the PSR test for 2023-24 because of the sales of the women's team and associated property transactions, not because of the operating of the business itself.

"Having now had the numbers on Chelsea, the other big number we were waiting for was the wage number.

"There has been a lot of rumour and speculation about what that wage number was for 2023-24. A lot of people were speculating that they had done a very aggressive cost-cutting on the wage bill.

"In actual fact, what appears to have happened is it's gone from about £360million of gross wages, excluding manager termination fees when they had this very large £45million cost, what seems to have happened is the core wage bill excluding what they paid to terminate Pochettino was probably around £320million.

"They have probably lost about £40million, so about 12-15 per cent of the wage bill. That is fine and is a step in the right direction, but it's a far cry from what they had been briefing around a £100million reduction.

"They didn't reduce the core wage bill by £100million. They reduced the overall wage bill by close to £100million, but largely because that included getting rid of a whole load of additional costs to pay off managers.

"I think their core reduction was maybe £40million at a push."
