Stefan Borson: Chelsea want to sell big-name stars

03/26/2025 04:30 PM
Chelsea's owners have been heavily scrutinised over the past couple of years after spending heavily and handing out lengthy contracts to players.
BlueCo, which is spearheaded by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, has spent more than £1billion on new signings since taking over in May 2022.
The London giants have now completed the double signing of Sporting Lisbon stars Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo for a combined £62.4million.
The Portuguese duo are understood to have both signed seven-year deals at Stamford Bridge.
They are not the only signings to have been handed such deals, with several players agreeing long-term contracts since BlueCo's takeover.
Cole Palmer signed a contract extension at Chelsea last summer, taking his deal up until 2033 before it expires.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider a lot of the players the club have signed on long-term deals aren't working, with Palmer being one of the few exceptions.
Mykhailo Mudryk could be facing a ban after he failed a drugs test last year.
Chelsea signed the Ukraine international on an eight-and-a-half-year contract from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, with the deal worth an initial £62million and potentially rising to £89million in add-ons.
Chelsea signings aren’t working after agreeing long-term deals
Borson insisted Chelsea would like to sell some of their stars on long-term deals.
He told Football Insider: "They clearly still believe in very long contracts despite the situations that they found themselves in with Mudryk and many other players.
"It’s not like these players that they’ve signed on seven, eight-year contracts are all working.
"I would say they absolutely are not working and a lot of them they’d like to shift on.
"Looking from the outside, it still seems a very odd approach on the contract side.
"But to be fair, the detail of those contracts may allow for earlier exits than the full terms."
Player | Fee (€million) |
Enzo Fernandez | 121 |
Moises Caicedo | 116 |
Wesley Fofana | 80.4 |
Mykhaylo Mudryk | 70 |
Marc Cucurella | 65.3 |
Chelsea certain to sign Jadon Sancho
Football Insider revealed on 19 March Man United are unlikely to be open to Jadon Sancho returning at the end of this season.
Chelsea have an obligation to buy the 24-year-old for £25million when his loan spell comes to an end, but they can pay a fee to cancel the deal if they wish.
However, sources say Chelsea are certain to sign Sancho if they qualify for next season's Champions League.
Enzo Maresca’s side currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, one point above fifth-place Manchester City after 29 matches.
