Arsenal look set to miss out on the Premier League title again this season after Liverpool have built up a healthy lead at the top of the table.

Mikel Arteta's side secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday (16 March), but they remain 12 points behind Liverpool in second place.

Recruitment at the Emirates has come into sharp focus after several key players have picked up injuries in recent months.

Football Insider revealed on 6 March Arsenal's appointment of former Atletico Madrid chief Andrea Berta is all but done.

They have been without a sporting director since Edu's departure from Arsenal in November following five years at the club.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football InsiderAtletico Madrid's recruitment during Berta's time with the club has been "incredible".

The 53-year-old spent 12 years in the Spanish capital, where he helped Diego Simeone's side secure two La Liga titles before leaving in January this year.

Andrea Berta must be smarter with Arsenal recruitment

Borson insisted Atletico Madrid have been one of the best-run sides around during Berta's time at the club.

He told Football Insider: "I think it’s going to be a great hire, isn’t it?

"He’s one of the best around. Atletico over the last 10 years have been one of the best-run clubs.

"I guess a lot of Atletico’s success has been related to stability at the top and Simeone.

"What’s interesting I think at Atletico is that you constantly see a lot of players who they either purchase for relatively low prices or that have actually outright failed in the Premier League that have actually done very well at Atletico, which is quite a nice situation for them to have been in.

"Either it means their recruitment is incredible because they’ve been able to find players and look beyond how they performed in the Premier League or Simeone is an incredible manager, who makes the sporting director look good by making players.

"It’s not uncommon for them to resurrect players they bought very cheaply.

"I suspect you can’t do it at Arsenal because you have to be a bit smarter with finding high-quality young players.

"Maybe it’s a different type of challenge, but I think it’ll be a good hire."

Mikel Arteta to avoid Arsenal sack pressure

Football Insider revealed on 11 March Arteta will not face any imminent sack pressure following Berta's appointment.

Arteta has faced criticism from Arsenal fans, with the Champions League their only remaining realistic chance of claiming a trophy this season.

The Spaniard has only won one major honour since returning to the club as manager in 2019, having lifted the FA Cup trophy in 2020.
