Stefan Borson: Liverpool to match Man United after mega off-field deal agreed

Liverpool posted a record-breaking turnover last season after dramatically increasing their commercial revenue.
The Premier League's side revenue surged from £594million to £614million after their commercial income rose from £272million to £308million.
Liverpool have confirmed they will switch shirt suppliers to Adidas ahead of the 2025-26 campaign once their current agreement with Nike expires at the end of this season.
Under the terms of the Nike deal, which has been in place since 2020, they earn a guaranteed £30million a year, plus 20 per cent royalty on net sales of club products.
Man United's 10-year deal with Adidas is worth £900million across the lifetime of the contract, while Arsenal earn £75million a season from the same supplier.
Liverpool are guaranteed to earn more than £60million annually from the German manufacturer, but their agreement has financial incentives built into it based on shirt sales and on-field performances.
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the Merseyside giants' new deal will likely be worth around £90million a year to match Man United's agreement.
Liverpool and Man United landed a £123million payout following their shirt and merchandise sales last season.
The Premier League rivals ranked joint-fourth in the world behind Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, who topped the charts with earnings of £165million.
Premier League club | Merchandise sales (£m) |
Liverpool | 123 |
Manchester United | 123 |
Arsenal | 101 |
Tottenham | 81 |
Chelsea | 80 |
Manchester City | 64 |
Liverpool to land guaranteed £60m payout
Borson insisted Liverpool's deal is unlikely to be lower than Man United's following their recent commercial success.
He told Football Insider: "I suspect it’s going to be worth very close to what United get.
"We know United get £90million and that drops to £80million if they’re not in the Champions League.
"The £60million that we’ve heard about is probably a minimum with a royalty on top depending on sales. But even on the royalty, it is probably pretty much guaranteed to give them at least another £30million.
"The numbers that they’ve got in the recent European landscape report are actually even higher than £90million, but I think those numbers in there are quite unreliable.
"If you have a look at the notes on the Uefa report, it kind of discredits its own numbers on that section because it suggests that they are either made on assumption and not supplied by the clubs themselves or they’re not like for like, so take that with a pinch of salt.
"If you look at the success of Liverpool commercially, fan-base wise and everything else, I think it's very hard to see how it’s going to be materially lower than the deal United get."
Darwin Nunez to agree Liverpool exit
Football Insider revealed on 15 March Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Liverpool this summer after missing out on a January move.
Arne Slot blocked the 25-year-old from making a potential move to the Saudi Pro League in the mid-season window as he wanted to keep his squad together to challenge in all four competitions.
The Uruguay international, who signed from Benfica in an £85million deal in 2022, has registered seven goals and seven assists in 39 appearances this season.
Liverpool, who sit top of the Premier League table, are set to take on Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday (16 March).
