Stefan Borson: Man United to spend '£100m' after Ornstein update

Manchester United could be set to spend big in the summer transfer window as they look to improve their squad ahead of next season.

Ruben Amorim's side currently sit 15th in the Premier League table after the Portuguese manager has failed to turn their fortunes around since replacing Erik ten Hag in November.

However, Man United could still qualify for the Champions League after reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they will face Athletic Bilbao next month.

Speaking on NBC on 23 April, The Athletic's David Ornstein revealed United are prioritising deals for Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap.

He added the finances are already in place to do those deals, and they don't depend on the club qualifying for Europe or agreeing player sales.

Cunha has a £62.5million release clause in his Wolves contract, while Delap will be available for £30million after Ipswich Town's relegation has been confirmed.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider United will likely spend £100million on those two signings once the agents' fees are included.

Cunha has registered 17 goals and six assists in 32 appearances this season, while Delap has 12 goals and two assists to his name in 36 outings.

Man United blew ‘financial crisis’ out of proportion

Borson insisted United never had a "financial crisis" after their summer transfer plans have been revealed.

He told Football Insider: "They are clearly going to spend.

"They are clearly going to buy Matheus Cunha. I think that’s looking very likely. I think they like the idea of the release clause.

"That was a common position when Omar Berrada was at City. They like their release clauses, it makes things a lot easier.

"You are only dealing with the agent rather than having to do multiple negotiations, and the price looks about right or even possibly a good price. He seems to be a good player.

"I think United will buy him. They are obviously also trying to buy Liam Delap, but so are a number of clubs.

"You know that together those will be the best part of £100million let’s say, especially with agent fees and everything else.

"They are saying they can do that without selling anybody, which is fine for this PSR year, but you do wonder how it all fits together with the overall position that they talked about in terms of the financial crisis that they’re in.

"I think the bottom line is they were never really in a financial crisis.

"They were in more a private-equity-style crisis, where the private-equity owner wanted to come in and make certain changes to the cost base and also generally wanted to put as little cash in as possible."

Man United’s new Andre Onana warning revealed

Football Insider revealed on 22 April United are aware replacing under-pressure goalkeeper Andre Onana will put a "severe" dent in their summer transfer budget.

Amorim's side are believed to be willing to listen to suitable offers for the 29-year-old, but they are not prioritising a change in the goalkeeper department.

The Cameroon international has made several costly errors and was even dropped for Altay Bayindir in the 4-1 loss against Newcastle United earlier this month.
