Newcastle United could have greater spending power this summer if they secure a return to the Champions League.

Eddie Howe's side currently sit third in the Premier League table despite suffering a 4-1 defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday (19 April).

That brought to an end their run of five straight wins in the Premier League in their pursuit of European football, with five Champions League spots on offer to top-flight clubs.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football InsiderNewcastle could agree another "headline" signing if they qualify for the Champions League.

Borson previously told Football Insider Newcastle could generate up to £100million in prize money if they qualify for the competition and compete well in it next season.

The north-east giants have already secured a place in the Conference League play-offs following their Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool, but their focus is purely on Champions League qualification.

Newcastle told to agree big-money signings

Borson insisted Newcastle have to buy players to compete in Europe next season.

He told Football Insider: "I think it will be interesting to see the sort of headline signings that Newcastle can make if they get the Champions League and how they bolster that first team, that core of their top players.

"They have now got maybe six really top players and they could add another really top player to that group as they really start to compete again.

"How much do you need to build the squad out for all those extra games if they’re in the Champions League or even if they’re in the Europa League, which looks very likely.

"Of course, they won the Carabao Cup, so they are in Europe next season.

"They have definitely got lots of games to deal with, and that’s the big contrast to this season.

"They are going to have to buy some players."

Newcastle ready move to sign James Trafford

Newcastle are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer despite Nick Pope's form since returning from injury.

Football Insider revealed on 10 April James Trafford is a top target for Newcastle as they believe he's capable of being the long-term number one at St James' Park.
