Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold and his advisers have likely been in talks about him joining Real Madrid on a permanent deal in January.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he would be "surprised" if the England international left the Merseyside giants this month.

Alexander-Arnold could be heading into his final six months at Anfield as his contract is due to expire in June 2025.

Real Madrid have been long-term admirers of the 26-year-old and are keen to sign him following Dani Carvajal's serious injury blow.

The La Liga giants are understood to be prepared to agree a £20million deal for the right-back in January despite him being available on a free this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 3 January Liverpool are unlikely to sell Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid this month.

Liverpool likely to reject Trent Alexander-Arnold offer

Borson admitted it seems "strange" talk around a January move has now emerged.

"You would have to think it's part of an overall move," Borson told Football Insider.

"It does look a bit coincidental. You would think him and his advisers have been involved in it. It seems a bit strange.

"Maybe he really wants to go in January. I would be surprised about that.

"You would have thought even if he wants to leave in the summer, he would want to see the season out given where they are in the Premier League and the Champions League, and then leave in the summer.

"It's kind of hard to read what the game is there. If he tells Liverpool he's definitely leaving in the summer for nothing, at some point there is a price.

"At the end of the day, the equation is pretty simple for Liverpool if he is definitely leaving.

"If he is definitely leaving, do you want to take £25-30million now, and not have him for four or five months of the season? You would think probably not.

"You would probably just keep him and take the upside of actually trying to win these things with him in the squad."
