Chelsea are set to come up against a former player at this summer’s World Cup who has a staggering trophy record as a coach.

Filipe Luis is only six months into his first senior managerial role after retiring at the start of 2024.

However, the Brazilian has already won three trophies with Brazilian club Flamengo.

Having spent the last five years of his playing career with the club, Luis managed their under-17 and under-20 sides last season.

The 39-year-old was then appointed first-team boss in September after lifting the U20 Intercontinental Cup.

He has since lost just one of his 26 matches in charge, winning 19 of them.

As a result, his side are currently on a 23-match unbeaten run which has seen them win three trophies in the last six months.

Luis has guided Flamengo to glory in the Brazilian Cup, Brazilian Super Cup and Rio de Janeiro State Championship.

The former left-back will now be aiming to spoil his old side’s dreams of scooping the Club World Cup this summer.

Both sides have been drawn into group D of the revamped tournament in the USA.

They are joined by Tunisia’s Espereance de Tunis, whilst the fourth side is set to be announced in the coming months.

Club Leon of Mexico had been placed into the pool before being removed due to breaching FIFA’s multi-club ownership rules.

Chelsea will face Luis and Flamengo in their second group match at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 20.

The revamped Club World Cup has a $1billion (£770m) prize fund on offer to the 32 clubs involved.

Luis previously spent a season at Stamford Bridge as a player, having signed in 2014.

He scored once from left-back in 26 appearances under Jose Mourinho as the Blues won both the Premier League and League Cup.

However, Luis returned to Atletico Madrid after just a year in England for a second spell with the Spanish giants.

The defender then went on to end his career at Flamengo, spending five years with the club before his retirement last year.

Meanwhile, at international level, Luis scored twice in 44 caps for Brazil.

He also won both the Copa America and Confederations Cup with his country.

Those trophies were among 20 pieces of major silverware won by Luis for club and country during his playing career.

Along with his Premier League crown, he also won league titles in both Spain and Brazil.

He also won the Copa Libertadores twice with Flamengo in both 2019 and 2022.

Those wins secured a pair of berths at the Club World Cup, although Luis was unable to win the tournament on either appearance.
