The Onion bears are pushing for "real change", but they can't see they're ACTUALLY getting it. Celtic are the least of their worries

Over at Ibrox, it’s becoming high time they forgot about Celtic, and focused on getting their own act together.

We’re the least of their worries right now.

Well, we are because they cannot compete with us.

It’s their inability to accept this that is the very reason they cannot compete with us.

Back in late 1994, when Fergus McCann began to enact his vision for the club, he accepted that at that moment in time, Celtic could not compete with Rangers 1872.

Instead, his focus was very much on financial sustainability for Celtic.

The Celtic fans trusted this process, and did not demand instant success.

We all knew there was a long road to recovery.

The rebuilding of Celtic Park was key to this.

And while we endured torrid times as Celtic supporters in the nineties, we trusted the process.

That very trust is a huge part of the reason we find ourselves where are today.

On the other side of the city, there is no trust between the fans and the board.

The onion bears are demanding “real change” at the Ibrox club.

What they fail to see is that “real change” is already being enacted over there.

But it’s the kind of change that is anathema to them.

The sort of change they want is the arrival of a Sugar Daddy, someone like say, Elon Musk (I know, I know!), who will provide them with unlimited funds, and the ability to dominate Celtic.

Because these two things are all that matter to them.

We arra peepul means nothing when you can’t lord it over everyone, especially Celtic.

Being broke robs them of their identity.

And that’s one of the main reasons they cannot accept it.

Patrick Stewart spelled it out for them on Saturday, he told them the truth.

Their reaction proves they cannot handle the truth.

Because this particular truth is the polar opposite to the fantasy world they’ve lived in up to this point.

As I alluded to earlier, change is happening, but its not the kind of change they want.

It is, however, “real change”.

The method of mid-season sacking has now been discarded.

Patrick Stewart realises that this way of operating is no longer tenable.

It is extremely costly, and also massively disruptive to the footballing operation.

However, the biggest change being enacted is the realisation that the club HAS to live within it’s means.

This is something the klanbase just cannot handle.

They talk about “real change”.

But what the hell is it exactly that they’re expecting?

A magic wand that will return them to the kind of club they were in the mid-nineties?

Because that’s all they ever talk about.

They cling to the belief that somehow they can be like that again.

Signing world class internationals and dominating domestically, lording it over everyone, including Celtic.

The fact that they don’t even realise that all of that was not real, and built entirely out of other people’s money, is why they struggle to come to grips with the reality they now find themselves in today.

The onion bears staged their mass walk out in the 55th minute of the game against St. Johnstone yesterday.

What did it achieve?

Nothing other than to sow division amongst their support.

Look, I never want to be empathetic with anything to do with that club, but I’ll put it this way, when it comes to their frustration around the manager, I understand it.

To a degree.

Four years ago, we went through something not disimilar.

We wanted the manager sacked, and the board vehemently ignored our wishes until it was far too late.

However, there are huge disparities between that situation, and theirs.

We were in that position through sheer complacency and bad decision making.

In May 2019, we had the funds and the stature to attract an elite manager.

We chose instead to take the easy option, the cheap option, and infamously offered the job to Neil Lennon in the Hampden showers.

We kissed ten in a row goodbye that day, and many of us knew it.

Our rage in 2021 was driven by the knowledge the decision making of May 2019 had resulted in where we found ourselves back then.

We had good reason to be as angry as we were.

The klanbase, on the other hand, with all of their faux outrage, needs to wake up and realise that nobody is going to sugar coat their situation any more.

This has been a long time coming, and somewhere, deep down, they had to have known it would come.

They are being told the truth for the first time.

And the truth hurts.

They are struggling to come to terms with it.

So, what have they done?

The only thing they know how to do best.

Lash out, throw a strop, and blame everybody else for their predicament.

Including their own board.

Whose only crime has been to tell them the cold hard truth.

Yes, they’re sticking with a manager who is already a busted flush, but there’s more to that than meets the eye.

The financial pitfalls of sacking him being the main bugbear.

Inevitably, they will be left with no choice but to sack him if results do not improve.

But then they’ll have to break it to the klanbase that that decision will have only served to weaken them further.

Its a vicious circle over there.

And Patrick Stewart is the poor misfortunate who has been tasked with sorting this unending mess out.

Its clear he intends enacting real change.

Whether he has the will power to see that through remains to be seen.

Many people before him have succumbed to klanbase pressure, including John Bennett.

Will he be the one to break the trend?

It will be interesting to see how this battle of wits pans out.

I’d wish him luck, but for obvious reasons, I won’t.

Instead, I’ll just watch on with glee.
