Paul Merson caused quite a stir this week with some comments about Manchester City's Rodri.

The pundit stated that Rodri is the only player in world football who would get into every team, and, as you can imagine, fans of other clubs put their cases forward for their star players.

Merson took to social media to address some of these arguments, and he made an interesting claim about Virgil van Dijk.

Merson says that while Van Dijk is an incredible player, he wouldn't necessarily get into every team in the world, stating that there's a case to make that Van Dijk wouldn't start for Arsenal ahead of Gabriel Magalhaes or William Saliba.

Virgil van Dijk wouldn't get into Arsenal's team

Merson shared his verdict on the idea that the £75m Liverpool star would get into every team in the world.

"People say Haaland, but there is a case that Kane could play instead of Haaland. The other one, Van Dijk. People said to me that Van Dijk would play in every other team, but would he play for Arsenal? Would you break up Gabriel and Saliba to get him in the team? There's a case that you might not. There's another one that wouldn't get in every team in the world," Merson said.

Gabriel and Saliba are incredible together

Virgil van Dijk may be the world's best centre-back, but there is an argument to make that he wouldn't get into the Arsenal side.

Defensive partnerships are more important than individual brilliance, and the chemistry that Saliba and Gabriel have is remarkable.

Of course, there's no reason why Saliba couldn't strike up the same sort of partnership with Van Dijk, but, as the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Van Dijk would get into most teams in world football, but perhaps he wouldn't actually start for this Arsenal side at the moment.
