Aberdeen's former chief Keith Wyness has been left slightly underwhelmed by the appointment of Fraser Thornton as the new Rangers chairman.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted he expected someone with links to new investment to be appointed to the role.

Rangers announced on 14 December Thornton would begin his role as their new chairman on 16 December.

The chartered accountant, who has experience working in the drinks industry, has replaced interim chairman John Gilligan after he temporarily took on the role following John Bennett's departure earlier this season.

Thornton has joined Patrick Stewart at Ibrox after the former Manchester United chief was recently confirmed as the club's new CEO.

But Wyness admitted Thornton's appointment is not what he was hoping for at Rangers.

He told Football Insider's Inside Track podcast: "It’s been announced that Fraser Thornton has been appointed as chairman so that’s new breaking news that he’s in there.

"He’s a man that’s had a lot of experience in the great product of Scotland, the Scottish Whiskey Association, so he’s done a lot in the drinks industry.

"He’s also been involved in sports and Scottish golf, and he’s been involved in the restructuring and the cost-cutting in terms of Scottish golf.

"It’s not quite the appointment I would have hoped for.

"I did want to see somebody coming in with links to new investment.

"They have got to get a plan that they can sell to investors going forward.

"It does need some money to really shake things up to let them really operate.

"Patrick Stewart will be there in his first three days looking at everybody and understanding what he's got to worth with."
