"This is the least difficult" – Celtic seen as easiest match by Club Brugge player
Today at 09:16 AM
Celtic face Club Brugge this evening in the Champions League, with Brendan Rodgers’ side sat 18th in the table and their opponents a little lower down in 23rd.
Club Brugge have won two and lost two of their matches so far in this UEFA campaign, and they see the match against Celtic as a chance to pick up more points.
Following Wednesday’s match against Celtic, Club Brugge will face Sporting CP and Juventus at home and then Manchester City away.
Given the matches ahead, their 32-year-old midfielder Hans Vanaken believes it’s their best opportunity left in this stage of the Champions League competition.
Ahead of the match against Celtic, he’s given an interview to De Standaard and is quoted by the Belgian newspaper as saying: “Of the remaining matches, this is the least difficult on paper. If we want to be in the top 24, we will have to win at least one more match. This could be the decisive one. I think it is great that Club’s ambition has grown so much over the years. In the past, it was okay to get 0 out of 18. Now it is normal that we want to push through. The only thing missing is the new stadium.”
Hans Vanaken, who is also Club Brugge’s captain, repeatedly came close to moves to the Premier League over the past decade but decided against it, partly because he repeatedly said he likes these big European nights and wouldn’t get that with a mid-table side.
Celtic will surely provide the kind of atmosphere he cherishes from UEFA competition.
