Earlier this year Thomas Tuchel was announced as England’s new Manager. His arrival sparked controversy. Can the man who failed to win Bayern their 12th consecutive title really be the man to take England forward?

Clear, transparent and concise

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Thomas Tuchel’s first press conference may be one of the most impactful ever delivered by a newly appointed English Manager. His familiarity with the English Media was apparent. Questions such as why he went back to Germany after his appointment were simply brushed aside.

When a German Reported asked whether he could answer the question in his native language he simply replied:

"I would like to do it in English. Out of respect for where we are and for the others."

Comments like these will certainly ease the worries of England Fans doubting his commitment to the England Role.

Tuchel's Tactical Approach to suit Liverpool players?

During his time at Chelsea, Tuchel employed a 3-4-2-1 with a heavy emphasis on progressive wing backs being able to drive the ball up the pitch and deliver the ball the the narrow front line.

This style of play suits Trent Alexander Arnold like a glove. With the 3 centre backs not requiring as much defensive support as a typical 2 centre back pairing. His natural attacking mindset and creative output would be allowed to flourish.

The 3 centre back pairing would offer both Jarrell Quansah and Joe Gomez an opportunity. With such a system, athleticism of the centre backs is paramount. Their main role is the cover ground and be able to sweep the ball in the case of possession loss. The 2 have also commonly featured at right back which has developed their ball playing capabilities that would suit the right side of the back 3.

A New Midfield

Another option is one he employed in his first season at Bayern, the 4-2-3-1 with a classic back line and more defensive full backs. The focus of the team was to utilize the vision of the 2 deep lying midfield playmakers to find the offensive wingers in space and enable them to drive at goal or to create chances.

Curtis Jones could very well be the beneficiary of such an approach. Under Jurgen Klopp he has developed from a flashy yet inconsistent winger, to an excellent all round midfielder. His ability to retain possession has been lauded. Still only 24 years old, he could very well be the future of England’s midfield for years to come.

Gone with the old

Gareth Southgate inherited possibly the most talented English squad since the infamous ‘Golden Generation’. During his 8 year tenure he failed to deliver a single Trophy whilst having players like Trent Alexander Arnold and James Maddison sit on the bench.

It was time for a change. Thomas Tuchel open minded approach to his squad selection may prove just the right opportunity.

Perhaps now it is time for the Liverpool players to earn themselves permanent places in the future England setup.
