Tottenham are closing in on their worst-ever Premier League finish under manager Ange Postecoglou this season.
Spurs’ lowest points total of 44 came in the 1997/98 campaign, while their worst season saw them finish 15th in the 1993/94 season.
Postecoglou‘s side currently sit 16th in the table but have Europa League glory still to play for with a semi-final against Bodo/Glimt set to get underway next week.
The Lilywhites could secure Champions League football despite being likely to record a bottom-half finish – if they overcome the Norwegian side and one of Man United or Athletic Bilbao in the final.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted Spurs‘ campaign may not be an outlier in seasons to come.
‘Spurs and West Ham in danger’, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness has insisted Tottenham are in a “spiral” and suggested smaller sides like Bournemouth and Fulham may be on a better path.
Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Aston Villa are among the clubs to make huge strides in recent years and are now challengers in the top half.
Wyness claimed sides like Tottenham and West Ham are now “in danger” in the Premier League.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
14 | Man United | 33 | 38 | -8 |
15 | Wolves | 33 | 38 | -13 |
16 | Tottenham | 33 | 37 | 10 |
17 | West Ham | 33 | 36 | -18 |
18 | Ipswich Town | 33 | 21 | -38 |
He told Football Insider's Inside Track podcast: "It's a big sign of how far they've fallen. It's been incredible to watch.
"We knew about the injuries, but to see the decline has been quite dramatic.
"Behind the scenes, there must be some disquiet in the dressing room. We know Postecoglou has had his issues with the fans.
"The European adventure is the only thing keeping them going right now.
"To see Spurs potentially finish 17th, it is weird. But it just shows how quickly a spiral can happen, and that's the danger in the Premier League now.
"It shows how the Bournemouths, Fulhams and so on have improved.
"You can't have an off spell like Spurs have done and not pay for it. West Ham will tell you the same.
"It shows how competitive the league is getting. This bodes well in terms of jeopardy for everyone in this league."
Bournemouth move to block Spurs' Iraola approach
Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola has also been linked with the potential vacancy in north London as the summer approaches.
Football Insider revealed on 18 April that Iraola has been offered a new contract as Bournemouth attempt to prevent him joining Tottenham.
Postecoglou is on borrowed time at Spurs despite reaching the Europa League semi-final this season – where they will face Bodo/Glimt across two legs.
