Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are both in the fourth round of the League Cup after overcoming lower-league opposition in the third round.

Spurs rode their luck in their meeting against Coventry City but eventually ran out 2-1 winners thanks to late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson.

Unai Emery’s Villans beat Wycombe Wanderers by the same score-line, but the opposition’s goal came at the end of the game as a mere consolation.

Now, Tottenham star James Maddison has got in touch with one of Aston Villa’s success stories from Tuesday night’s game.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison congratulates Aston Villa ace Emi Buendia

Maddison sent a message to Emi Buendia after the Argentine took to Instagram with a heartfelt post in wake of his return to the Villa starting XI.

Buendia was ruled out for more than a year with a knee ligament injury but was back in action in Villa’s League Cup win at Wycombe.

The £33million man marked his first senior start since May 2023 with the game's opening goal, a looping header in the 55th minute.

“This feeling again,” wrote Buendia. “It was long long time waiting for a moment like this one, many days , many months working very hard.

“Thankful to everyone who help me to get here again, this is only the beginning. Now ready for the new round of Carabao Cup. UP THE VILLA.”

Maddison responded by writing “well done mate” in the comments.
