Arsenal are set to step up their interest in signing a new winger in the January transfer window after Bukayo Saka’s latest injury blow.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Gunners are already working on deals ahead of next months’ window.

Saka, 23, was withdrawn after 24 minutes during the 5-1 win against Crystal Palace with what appeared to be a hamstring strain.

Following the game, Mikel Arteta was unable to provide a significant update, but admitted he was “really worried” that the winger may be ruled out for a long period.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 4 November that Arsenal are plotting a move to sign a “superstar” winger in the January transfer window.

That news came amid growing concerns about Gabriel Martinelli’s performances, while there is a recognition that the squad is lacking sufficient depth out wide.

Raheem Sterling and Leandro Trossard are the main contenders for Saka’s position as things stand, but the England international’s absence is set to have a “massive” affect on the team.

Arsenal eye Bukayo Saka replacement after latest injury blow

Following an injury blow earlier in the season, Brown told Football Insider that alarm bells were raised at the Emirates and the recruitment team had begun assessing potential alternatives.

Now, after the winger was sidelined once more, the former scout who spent over a decade at Man United during their most successful period and has a wealth of experience in top-level recruitment, insisted that the club will make a move in January.

They’re definitely going to look at a new winger,” he told Football Insider.

“Because Saka being out for however long with a hamstring injury will have a massive impact on the team and on their plans for January.

“We spoke about it earlier this season, the recruitment team won’t wait until Saka gets injured and then panic about what they’re going to do.

“They’ve already been assessing potential options to replace him and to provide cover so that they can make a move in the January window.

“The transfer team are always prepared for any eventuality.

“Arsenal have been looking at wingers anyway, but Saka’s injury will probably push that higher up their list of priorities in the transfer window.

“But it may be that they can’t get the players they want anyway, particularly in January.

“You have to be absolutely sure that the player you get is the one you want, you can’t rush into a deal because you end up spending money on a player who, long-term, you don’t need.”
