Liverpool’s stunning Premier League title tilt has been slightly overshadowed by the speculation surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold and his fellow contract rebels.

Alexander-Arnold’s contractual situation at Anfield has dominated much of the discourse surrounding the Reds this term, taking the attention away from the remarkable job Arne Slot has done on Merseyside.

The 26-year-old is far from the only standout Liverpol star with a huge question mark hanging over his future, with Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s contracts all heading towards expiry.

It remains to be seen which of the trio, if any, agree to sign new deals to extent their stays with the club, but academy graduate Alexander-Arnold is the player most credibly linked with a summer departure.

Liverpool fans the world over will struggle to let go of a player whose career is so intertwined with Anfield and the city, but as the weeks of his contract tick down, Alexander-Arnold looks set for the exit door.

Trent Alexander-Arnold agrees £12.5m-plus Real Madrid contract

While Van Dijk and Salah in particular have been linked with moves abroad to a variety of different clubs across Europe and the Middle East, there’s only ever been one truly in the running for Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool losing Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold would leave some huge holes to fill

According to Sky Sport.ch journalist Sacha Tavolieri (24 March), the right-back has agreed a five-year deal with the Spanish giants over personal terms, and will officially join Real Madrid on 1 July.

Already earning roughly £9million per season at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold’s new contract will see him make at least £12.5m a year in Madrid, as well as “attractive performance bonuses” and a sign-on fee.

Liverpool now resigned to Alexander-Arnold exit

While hindsight suggests that Liverpool should have long since resolved the contractual situations of Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold, they’ve certainly done their best to tie the latter down to a new deal.

Alexander-Arnold, however, remains out-of-contract in little over three months’ time despite the Reds’ repeated attempts to re-open negotiations, and the path now looks set for him to head for pastures new.

Unlike with Salah and Van Dijk, Liverpool already have a ready-made replacement for the England international in the form of Conor Bradley, but that won’t soften the blow of losing such a strong talent.

Real Madrid look set to get arguably the world’s best rightback for nothing other than a £12.5m salary and a sign-on bonus to equate a small transfer fee, and their gain is without question Liverpool’s loss.
