Trent Alexander-Arnold is said to have "got the hump" over Liverpool have approached his contract talks when compared with Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

After months of speculation, the saga around the future of the right-back looks as though it is finally coming to an end.

With his contract expiring in the summer, Alexander-Arnold is expected to leave Liverpool to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

That is inevitably a blow for Arne Slot‘s side, who of course have other contract issues to deal with before the summer.

Both Salah and Van Dijk also see their deals with Liverpool expire at the end of this season, although neither are being touted for moves elsewhere in the same way as Alexander-Arnold.

Now, it is claimed the right-back may have been unhappy with the Merseyside club over the way those individual situations have been approached.

Since it emerged that Alexander-Arnold is set to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid, the England international has come in for heavy criticism from a number of the club’s fans.

Speaking on talkSPORT though, Alan Brazil hit out supporters who have taken aim at the 26-year-old, deeming them "bang out of order".

He also claimed the player has every right to move to Madrid given the size of the club, while suggesting the right-back is unhappy with how his contract talks have been handled in comparison to Salah and van Dijk.

Reacting to an article claiming Alexander-Arnold should have issued a statement to clarify his Liverpool future earlier this season, Brazil said:

“I don’t know how true this is but I was told that he had the hump a little bit because they weren’t pressing him to sign a new contract.

“They were more interested, Liverpool, in Salah and Van Dijk, and I think he might have got the hump a little bit over that.”

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour responded by suggesting they have prioritised Salah and Van Dijk due to a belief they would need more convincing to stay than a boyhood scouser such as Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool had their priorities right over contracts

Football Insider Verdict

In this situation it would be understandable if Alexander-Arnold felt hurt by the fact the club have prioritised other contract situations over his.

Any player is obviously going to want to feel like they are the most wanted where they are, and so it will be tough to take if it feels like they are making more of an effort to keep others over him.

That will be particularly the case in this situation, given his long and personal connection with the club and area.

However it is worth noting that Alexander-Arnold has struggled to produce his best performances for Liverpool on a number of occasions this season.

By contrast, both Salah and Van Dijk have been outstanding figures who will have proved hugely influential if Slot’s side do indeed lift the Premier League title this season.

As a result it would make sense if Liverpool feel their contracts need to be a higher priority, especially given they do not have a natural link with the club in the same Alexander-Arnold does either.
