Tottenham Hotspur have had some brilliant managers in their history, even if they didn't work out at Spurs.

The likes of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho are two of the best managers in modern history, despite their failures in north London, while Mauricio Pochettino made a real name for himself at Spurs.

Tottenham haven't always had the best of luck when it comes to managerial appointments, but that could've been very different had things gone another way back in the 1980s.

Indeed, speaking to TNT Sports, Alex Ferguson has now admitted that he rejected the chance to join Tottenham when he was the manager of Aberdeen as he was told to only join Manchester United.

Alex Ferguson rejected Tottenham

Fergie named Tottenham among the clubs he rejected as he looked to leave Aberdeen.

The legendary manager says that he also knocked back Arsenal and Wolves before ultimately ending up at Manchester United.

"I turned down Arsenal, I turned down Wolverhampton Wanderers and I turned down Tottenham," Ferguson stated.

"I said that maybe it was time for me to leave, blah, blah, blah, and he [Aberdeen Chairman Dick Donald] said to me 'don't talk like that.' You should go only to one club – Manchester United.

Ferguson could've transformed Tottenham

After winning 13 league titles and two Champions Leagues with Manchester United, it's fair to say that Alex Ferguson is one of the greatest managers ever.

Fergie is a United legend, but it's hard not to ponder what could've been had he joined Tottenham at that time.

In the late 1980s, Spurs were just becoming a bit of a force with a team that included the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Chris Waddle and Gary Lineker, three of the best players in the world at that time.

If Fergie had coached these players in north London, perhaps he could've turned Tottenham into the force that he eventually made Manchester United into.

Gary Neville recently stated that Ferguson was a better manager than Jurgen Klopp, and while it's impossible to say, it's fair to assume that he would've had a serious impact at Tottenham if he'd headed to north London instead of Manchester.
