After a run of four games on the bench for Tottenham Hotspur, James Maddison returned to Ange Postecoglou's starting eleven against Everton.

Tottenham fans have been calling for Postecoglou to be more pragmatic, and the Spurs boss seemingly attempted to set up his side slightly more defensively against Everton.

Ben Davies came in and Spurs switched to a three or five at the back, a move that didn't work given that Tottenham were 3-0 down at half-time.

Jamie O'Hara slammed Tottenham during the game, also calling Postecoglou's future into question.

Before the defeat to Everton, it was believed that Postecoglou was safe at Tottenham for now, a position that is unlikely to change immediately.

James Maddison understands why Tottenham fans are ‘unhappy’ right now

That being said, Maddison, who played all 90 minutes in Spurs' twelfth loss of the season, made a comment about the club's away supporters after full-time.

Maddison was speaking to Spurs Play and seemed to be in an understandably glum mood, given the events that had just unfolded.

And the Spurs vice-captain understood why away supporters would be 'unhappy' with what they just saw, saying that it was time for everyone at Tottenham to 'stick together’.

Maddison said: "We've got to stick together like I said, the fans are going to be rightly disappointed, just got to take that criticism on the chin, all of us.

"They are entitled to their opinion, a few unhappy fans in the away end there, rightly so, you've got to own up to it, you've got to accept that we weren't good enough and like I said, take that criticism on the chin.

"Not really too much to say, they probably don't want to hear too much either apart from the fact that we're going to keep going, we've got no option and we need to be better."

Ange Postecoglou criticised again after Everton defeat

Up next, Tottenham will travel to Hoffenheim in the Europa League before they welcome Leicester City to north London next weekend.

Spurs are still competing to finish in one of the top eight spots in the league phase of the Europa League, meaning that a win in Germany is crucial.

Postecoglou will hope to have Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven back as soon as possible, two key players who need to avoid any more issues once they return.

Tottenham have options to replace Postecoglou, but many in N17 still don't consider sacking the manager as the right decision right now.

Spurs have already cycled through a host of top names over the years, and simply getting rid of Postecoglou, who is underperforming, may not be the answer.
