Rangers’ Old Firm victory over Celtic could be Vaclav Cerny’s final Scottish Premiership appearance before returning to Wolfsburg this summer.

Barry Ferguson proved himself capable of being Rangers’ next permanent manager, helping the Gers to a second consecutive win over their bitter rivals with a 3-2 win at Celtic Park on Sunday 16 March.

Goals from Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande saw the Light Blues race into an unexpected lead, though Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate netted in the second half to add life to the derby.

Having replaced Cyriel Dessers, Hamza Igamane scored a dramatic winner to crush Brendan Rodgers’ side, and while Cerny could not get on the scoresheet, his impact did not go unnoticed.

His impact all season has not gone unnoticed, notching 17 goals and seven assists across all competitions, and leaving Rangers supporters desperate for Cerny to join permanently.

However, fans may have to wait until next season to see the Czechia international play in the league again, that is if he does sign for the Gers in the summer, following his actions at Celtic Park.

Vaclav Cerny at risk of SPFL ban after Old Firm antics

Celtic supporters were fuming with Cerny when Igamane’s winner hit the back of the net, having squirted water over them while running down the touchline in celebration.

Now, according to the Daily Record [18 March], the winger is at risk of being punished by the Scottish FA, which could see him banned from anywhere between two and eight games.

Games against Dundee, Hibernian and Aberdeen remain until the Scottish Premiership splits, which means if he is suspended for the full eight games, Ferguson will be without a key player for the remainder of the domestic season.

Barry Ferguson wants to bring Europa League title to Rangers

Of course, with the Gers already 13 points behind the Hoops at the top of the table, the main focus will be on reaching the Europa League final, but a lack of games might hinder Cerny instead of helping him.

Cerny has struggled with staying fit throughout the season, so while some fans may take the potential ban as a plus for the Europa League, a lack of consistency might actually hurt him.

No other player at Ibrox has more goal contributions from the Czechia international, with Dessers and Igamane coming the closest to the winger’s eight with five each.

Ferguson will be doing everything in his power to persuade the boardroom that he is the figure to lead the Light Blues forward next season, but without one of his biggest stars, those hopes might have just crumbled a little.
