Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted “We got work to do,” after their 1-0 League Cup defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday (January 8) was marred by a red card storm.
The 33-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Arne Slot’s side fell to a League Cup semi-final first-leg defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Spurs youngster Lucas Bergvall scored the eventual and controversial winner in the 86th minute, just moments after a rash challenge on Liverpool defender Konstantinos Tsimikas that could have seen his receive a second yellow card.
Van Dijk made clear his displeasure on and off thr pitch, while Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his backroom staff raged at the officials from the touchline.
Speaking after the game, Van Dijk revealed he was unhappy with Stuart Attwell for not sending the teenager off.
The Dutchman told Sky Sports: "Listen, it was quite obvious that it was going to be a second yellow. Obviously, I think it was pretty clear and it was a coincidence that a minute later he scores the winner.
“But it is what it is. He (Atwell) made a mistake in my opinion and I told him, he thinks he didn't, but it’s quite obvious and everyone on the sideline knew exactly that it was supposed to be a second yellow.
“The fact is, he should have been off. There’s a linesman there, there’s a fourth official there, there’s VAR, there’s the referee and he doesn’t get a second yellow.
“I’m not saying that this is the reason why we lost tonight, but it was a big moment in the game.”
