Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has sent fans a message after they surprisingly dropped points in their latest Premier League outing.

Arne Slot's men were held to a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday (14 January) as Diogo Jota's second-half goal earned his team a point after Chris Wood had given his side the lead in the sixth minute.

The result allowed Forest to climb into second place, increasing the pressure on Liverpool with just six points separating the teams.

However, the draw was still seen as a surprise to most as it was only the sixth time this season that Slot's team have dropped points in the Premier League.

Forest have been a thorn in Liverpool's side this season though as Nuno Espirito Santo's men handed them their only defeat of the campaign back in September.

Van Dijk took to Instagram to reflect on the tough fixture as he said, "Tough fight today. London next, we keep going!"

Virgil Van Dijk still hasn't signed a Liverpool contract

The Reds will be back in action on Saturday (18 January) against Brentford, who are fresh off their draw against Man City on Tuesday night.

It promises to be another challenging fixture as Liverpool aim to extend their gap at the top of the table to continue their push to become the Premier League champions.

That's an achievement that might mean more to Van Dijk than most as this could be his final season at the football club.

The Netherlands international is out of contract at Anfield this summer, and he is currently able to negotiate with foreign clubs about a pre-contract agreement.

Insider Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Liverpool defender is expected to commit to a new contract, but that has still yet to take place.
