Virgil van Dijk is one of the most popular figures in the Liverpool dressing room.

As the club captain, it's a pre-requisite that Van Dijk gets on with everyone, and there are a number of players he's spent a long time with.

Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo are Van Dijk's friends from the national team, while he's played with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold for years.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Van Dijk was asked to name his best friend in football, and he said that Joe Gomez was actually his best mate in the game.

Van Dijk says that he and Gomez are very close, while he's also very friendly with Manchester City's Nathan Ake.

Joe Gomez is Virgil van Dijk's best friend

Van Dijk spoke about the £4m defender.

"Who is your best friend in football?" Van Dijk was asked.

"I have a lot of friends in football, but the person I'm closest to at the moment is Joe Gomez. We've been through everything together here at the club. Highs and lows. We are very close to each other," Van Dijk said.

"The other one I would say is Nathan Ake and our families are close to each other, so those guys."

Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk have been through it all together

As Van Dijk says, he and Gomez have been through everything together.

They won a Premier League title as Liverpool's first-choice centre-back pairing, they won a Champions League as a part of the same squad, and they were even by one another's side in their darkest hours.

Back in the 2020/21 season, both Van Dijk and Gomez were out with long-term knee injuries, and we can imagine that there were plenty of gruelling physio and recovery sessions that these two had to help one another get through.

Gomez may not be one of Liverpool's most important players these days, but his presence at the club is still valuable both on and off the pitch.
