Bart Verbruggen has attempted to remain positive on social media despite the Brighton goalkeeper’s failings during the international break.

The 22-year-old shot-stopper, who has kept six Premier League clean sheets so far this season, featured in both of the Netherlands’ Nations League clashes against Spain, eventually being knocked out of the competition.

On Sunday 23 March, Verbruggen, who Chelsea are keen on signing, was helpless as goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Lamine Yamal sent the second leg to penalties, but it was Unai Simon who triumphed.

The Dutchman will now return to the Amex Stadium for the end-of-season run-in, with plenty still to achieve as the Seagulls aim to finish in the top four as well as advance in the FA Cup.

Taking to Instagram [24 March], Verbruggen wrote: “Disappointed to be eliminated, but lots of positives to take from this week,” signed off with an orange heart emoji.

Virgil van Dijk, who could be in his final season at Liverpool, and Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven both liked the post, as did Brighton teammates Joao Pedro, Joel Veltman and Mats Wieffer.

Fabian Hurzeler ready to achieve the impossible at Brighton

Football Insider verdict

The Seagulls have steadily been building towards being a consistent Premier League club, and with all the pieces of the puzzle firmly in place, the positives all look to be coming to the Amex Stadium at once.

With silverware still a possibility via the FA Cup, taking on Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals, Hurzeler also has the chance to deliver Champions League football this season.

The Seagulls are battling for a European finish.

Chelsea, Man City, Newcastle United, Fulham, and Aston Villa are all fighting for a top-four finish, making it almost impossible to predict how the final standings will look, but it is an extremely exciting prospect.

Pedro, who is one of many linked with a Liverpool move this summer, Georginio Rutter and Kaoru Mitoma have all shone in attack, with Carlos Baleba pulling the strings from midfield.

Without European football, there is always the chance of these players looking for new and better opportunities at bigger clubs in the Premier League.
