Wayne Rooney’s failure at Plymouth Argyle is set to see director of football Neil Dewsnip sacked as well, according to The Guardian.

Rooney was appointed by the Championship club back in the summer in what was seen by many as a risky move after a disastrous spell at that level with Birmingham City last season.

Ultimately, the decision to appoint the former Man United and England man did not work out, and he left the club on Tuesday (31 December).

That came after a miserable run of just one win in the last 14 games that left Plymouth bottom of the Championship table and four points from safety.

It appears that will now be costly for Dewsnip who is expected to leave his role at Home Park after being blamed by the board for the failed appointment of Rooney.

This is not the first managerial gamble that has backfired for him recently either. Ian Foster was also sacked in April last year after just 16 games in charge.

Neil Dewsnip must take responsibility for managerial struggles at Plymouth

Dewsnip has been with the club for a number of years now helping to oversee their rise from League Two to the Championship.

As a result there may be some at Plymouth who will be sad to see him go given how he helped the Pilgrims in the past.

Ultimately though in Foster and now Rooney it is two managerial appointments in a row where he has got things wrong.

Rooney is not the only appointment to have failed for Plymouth in the last 12 months.

Considering that makes the next appointment vital as the club fight to avoid relegation it makes sense they would want someone else in charge of those decisions taking over his role.

While plenty of Plymouth fan frustration recently has been aimed at Rooney, it is worth noting that Dewsnip has also come under scrutiny for his role in these recent managerial appointments.

Moving him on as well could therefore also help to get the Home Park faithful back on side after what has been a tricky period for the club.
