What Eddie Howe did to Liverpool players straight after the final whistle as Newcastle sealed 2-1 Carabao Cup final win

Goals by Dan Burn and Alexander Isak inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Liverpool as Newcastle lifted the Carabao Cup on Sunday.
The Magpies secured a first piece of domestic silverware since 1955 at Wembley – a result which left Bruno Guimaraes and others in tears – managing to withstand a late fightback after Federico Chiesa netted in the 94th minute.
Eddie Howe was particularly animated throughout as he desperately hoped to avoid a repeat of the 2023 Carabao Cup final – where Newcastle suffered defeat to Manchester United – and the Magpies boss did something admirable immediately after the final whistle.
Eddie Howe shakes the hand of every Liverpool player
Before the 47-year-old embarked on his celebrations, he sportingly went over to each Liverpool player to shake their hands and console them, an act those on Sky Sports, such as Shay Given, praised.

Howe – who Thomas Frank admires – clearly respected the effort put in by Arne Slot’s men towards the final whistle, where that late strike by Chiesa had the Newcastle end of Wembley holding their collective breath.
In defeating Liverpool, the Newcastle boss became the first English manager to win a major trophy with a Premier League side since Harry Redknapp won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.
How much prize money do Newcastle get for beating Liverpool?
You will be surprised to hear just how little the English Football League (EFL) award the winners of the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle were handed just £100,000 for overcoming the Reds at Wembley, which – in the context of football nowadays – is a drop in the ocean for Premier League clubs.
Such a sum would not even be enough to pay the wages of Sandro Tonali for one week. The Italian earns £120,000-a-week at St James’ Park.
In regards to Liverpool, the Reds receive £50,000 after finishing as runners-up.
