Who Will Liverpool Sign to Replace Trent Alexander-Arnold This Summer?

Trent Alexander-Arnold and his departure to Real Madrid is a story that’s long been coming. Unfortunately that does little to take the pain away. How do Liverpool replace the heir to the Captaincy who’s chosen to leave his Boyhood club? Perhaps the answer is not as difficult as it seems.
Gerrard’s heir to Public Villain
Fabrizio Romano’s confirmation of an imminent agreement between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid strikes a blow to the heart of every Liverpool Fan.
The things we fans dream of. To play for our Boyhood side, lead them to trophies the club hasn’t won in decades and become Vice-Captain, in line to eventually lead the side like his idol Steven Gerrard once did.
From the boy who had posters of Liverpool’s legendary Number 8 hung in his room, to now joining the club that will compete against Liverpool for the highest honours.
As Steven Gerrard once said:
If I win a couple of trophies at Liverpool, it would mean an awful lot more to me than to win 10 at Chelsea, Inter Milan or Real Madrid
The Club is always bigger than any player
Liverpool is a Footballing Institution. Players come and go, but the club and it’s fans will always persevere.
It is not our role as fans to berate those that leave, but to support those that are still here and fighting for the club, city and it’s fans.
Liverpool have an incredible squad and are in line to win their second Premier League title in 5 years.
How do Liverpool plan going forward in a time after Trent Alexander-Arnold?
Faith in Conor Bradley
The young Northern Irishman has been a revelation ever since his breakthrough season last year.
In 2022/23 Conor Bradley joined Bolton on loan in League One. He made 53 appearances, scoring 7 and assisting 8 and was subsequently voted
- Bolton Wanderers Player of the Year: 2022–23
- Bolton Wanderers Players’ Player of the Year: 2022–23
- Bolton Wanderers Young Player of the Year: 2022–23
An incredible season which endeared him to the fans who’d hoped he’d stay for another year following their promotion to the Championship. That was not Liverpool’s plan however.
He was now seen by Jurgen Klopp as a capable deputy in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence.
After returning from injury in late November, he made his full Premier League debut against Bournemouth providing an assist.
He went on to feature prominently that season, famously in a mesmerising Man of the Match performance in a 4-1 thumping of Chelsea at Anfield. Bradley scored his first goal for the club and also registered two assists.
Injury Concern
If not for injuries, some would argue Conor Bradley should be above Trent Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order. His offensive capabilities are matched by his defensive tenacity which has been a constant criticism in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s game.
His proclivity to injury is a concern. Bradley has missed a total of 47 games, totalling 228 days out over his 2 years since returning from Bolton.
Therefore despite his obvious potential, Liverpool and Arne Slot should not be fully reliant on the Northern Ireland International.
A signing will need to be made.
Singing Experience vs Potential
Names such as Jeremie Frimpong, Pedro Porro and Achraf Hakimi have been linked with Liverpool even prior to the announcement of Trent Alexander Arnold’s imminent departure.
The Liverpool Transfer Committee will now be assessing these possible options.
Do they sign an experienced Right Back who immediately enters the fold, or do they invest funds elsewhere and prioritize bringing in a young Full Back who can be moulded into a player of Arne Slot’s liking.
The Decision
Whatever decision is made, Liverpool Fans can be rest assured that Conor Bradley is a player of immense potential. If he is to remain fit, the future of Liverpool’s Right Back position remains secure.
Will Liverpool go big in the summer for a replacement, or do they put their full trust in Conor Bradley and sign another young Full Back to deputize him in absence?
Trent Alexander-Arnold and his unique style may be impossible to replace. However, the future of Liverpool’s defence may ultimately be better off as a result of his departure.
