Ibrahima Konate is now focusing elsewhere after Liverpool were beaten by Newcastle at Wembley, drawing reactions from Premier League teammates and rivals.

The 25-year-old played 57 minutes of the Reds’ Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle on Sunday (16 March), putting in a disappointing performance.

Despite establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs, Konate struggled against PSG as the Merseyside club were dumped out of the Champions League, prior to his disappointing performance against the Magpies.

With his contract expiring in 2026, Liverpool are trying to tie down Konate to a contract extension, as they run the risk of losing both him, and Virgil van Dijk in back-to-back transfer windows for nothing.

Ibrahima Konate promises Liverpool fans ‘we will improve’

Following the loss to Newcastle, Konate posted two images of himself on Instagram, captioned: “We are all disappointed after yesterday's result but thank you for staying with us throughout the game.

“We will be back and we will improve.

“Now it's time for international break and then a big push going into the last months of the season.”

The post was liked by Luis Diaz, and Arsenal defender, William Saliba, whom Konate will likely play alongside with for France in their upcoming international matches against Croatia.

With Van Dijk seemingly no closer to signing a contract extension, all eyes will be on Konate’s next move.

The former RB Leipzig defender is entering his prime years, at 25-years-old, but may be concerned that Liverpool could lose three of their best players, with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also out of contract in the summer.

The Reds may find themselves thrust into a state of upheaval, and results may suffer as a consequence.

It would not be a surprise to see the France international hesitate on signing a new deal at Anfield, giving him next season to judge a potentially rebuilt Liverpool side.

Konate will now doubt have plenty of suitors next summer, and there has been an increasing trend of the world’s best players allowing their contracts to run down, giving them more bargaining power on their future.
