Wolves disbelief as 'Vitor Pereira takes a swing at Cunha before transfer exit'
Matheus Cunha looks sure to leave Wolves in the January transfer window after what manager Vitor Pereira said about him, Michael Dawson and Paul Merson have suggested.
The attacker has been a key player for the club this season as they battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
There is though uncertainty around his future at Molineux, with suggestions that Arsenal are preparing to move for the Brazilian after talks over a new contract stalled.
Pereira then criticised the attacker over his body language and suggestions he did not applaud the Wolves fans following their defeat at Chelsea on Monday (20 January) night (BBC Sport).
The fact that the manager did so in a public environment has left Dawson and Merson expecting the attacker to leave the club before the current window closes.
Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday about those comments from Pereira on Cunha, Dawson said (12:16pm): “I think it comes down to the price that somebody’s willing to pay. You look earlier on in the transfer window there was a contract there for him to be signed, it hasn’t happened, and then you see all of a sudden the speculation around him, it’s obviously turned his head which, rightly so, it would do…
“Wolves’ll be thinking if he isn’t there they’re gonna get relegated, arguably in my opinion they still might get relegated even with him there. And Vitor Pereira coming out and saying that it’s not probably the greatest thing to do.
“You can say it in-house. And now he’s telling the whole world that he’s obviously not happy, because the speculation, there’s some big football clubs there and he’s going ‘I want away’. Whether it’s right or wrong we’ve seen it before with players. He’s been their main player this year, but I don’t like when managers come out to [criticise].”
Merson himself then added: “Don’t it tell you that he’s leaving in the next couple of weeks? When the manager goes after their best player by a million miles, the only player that can really keep them up, and the manager’s digging him out?
“Surely the manager must think ‘I might as well have a swing at him cus he’s going’. It must be, I mean why would do that?”
Matheus Cunha exit a major blow for Wolves as Arsenal lurk
Football Insider Verdict
It might not be a surprise if Cunha does now leave in the January transfer window following these latest developments.
The Wolves attacker has already reacted angrily to a reporter who suggested he did not applaud supporters at the end of that game at Stamford Bridge.
He is therefore unlikely to be happy with the fact that his manager has made similarly critical comments about him over that incident.
That may further motivate him to look for a move away from the club at a time when his future at Molineux was already uncertain.
But with Wolves still locked in a relegation battle, the attacker’s quality is surely key to any hopes they have of staying in the Premier League this season.
As a result there may therefore be some concern around the club about what those comments from Pereira might mean for Cunha.
That will particularly be the case after defeat to Arsenal on Saturday (25 January) further enhanced their relegation fears.
In other news, Cunha may not be the only Wolves star leaving for one of England's top clubs this January.
