Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Santiago Bueno has admitted he regularly talks with his Uruguay teammates about a potential return to Peñarol.

ESPN cover comments from the 26-year-old defender today in which he admits a return to his former club is very much on the agenda.

Bueno has been with Wolves since 2023 when he made the move from Girona in a €12m deal that summer.

That brought an end to a six year stay in Spain which had seen him playing for Barcelona's youth sides as well as CF Peralda on loan before moving to Girona in 2019.

He had moved to Barcelona to Peñarol's U19's side in 2017, with the Catalan's paying €1m to secure the youngsters. He doesn't regret that decision, but admits he talks about a return to his former club regularly with his fellow Uruguay internationals.

“I don’t regret the path I took; these are decisions you make under different circumstances," he said.

“Yes, of course," he added about a return.

"It’s a topic of conversation, for example, in the national team when we team up with Fede Valverde or Darwin, players with whom we played together in Peñarol’s youth system and who left at a young age.

“There’s always that topic of conversation, that possible reunion, which would also be very nice."

In the meantime, Bueno is focusing on establishing himself with Wolves, where he's been more of a regular this season, and in the Uruguay national team.

He's only made six appearances for his country to date, making his debut in March 2024 against Japan and adding another against South Korea before spending a year out of the side.

He returned against Paraguay in September 2024 and has since added appearances against Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador to his collection. That's seen him working under Marcelo Bielsa, who left a very positive impression on him.

"In his first call-up, for two friendlies in June, I had finished the 2022/23 season injured in Girona and was recovering in Spain," he added.

"They gave me a few days off because it was the summer vacation, so I went to Uruguay, and he contacted me because he wanted to meet me and explain his way of working and what they thought of me.

"I went to the complex and we had a nearly two-hour talk where he had a lot of clippings of my plays, things I did well and things I need to improve. It had a big impact on me, and for the better, because he had a lot of information about me, things that even you don’t see sometimes and that help you become a better footballer."
