'Wrong': Thierry Henry suggests the four transfer mistakes Pep Guardiola has actually made at Man City
Today at 11:15 AM
For a majority of his spell at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has been the benchmark for every other manager in the Premier League and arguably even across world football.
But for the first time since his City side failed to win the Premier League title in 2017 and 2020 respectively, Pep Guardiola would admit that his side are in crisis mode.
Guardiola claimed he’s not “good enough” after Manchester City were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in what was a level of capitulation that will be remembered for decades.
Manchester City’s crisis cannot be fixed as well, according to Jamie Carragher due to his belief that there squad is ageing.
While discussing the teams involved in the Premier League title race, Thierry Henry, who famously worked with the Catalan at Barcelona appeared to question some of his former manager’s decisions.
Thierry Henry hints Pep Guardiola made transfer blunders at Man City
The Frenchman feels one of the biggest problems Manchester City are facing is that aside from Erling Haaland, they cannot rely on any other player to score goals.
As a result, Thierry Henry suggested that letting goalscorers like Julian Alvarez, Riyad Mahrez and Cole Palmer leave while re-signing a declining Ilkay Gundogan were errors from Pep Guardiola.
Henry stated on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “He’s a human being, he can get stuff wrong.”
“I just think it is the first time and we’re allowed to say it that we can maybe challenge his decision of letting Cole Palmer go and Riyad Mahrez, [Julian] Alvarez, [Ilkay] Gundogan came back and he’s not the Gundogan of scoring 17 in a season.”
The World Cup winner added: “You’re missing those goals although the big man [Haaland] is scoring. The big man is scoring the same amount of goals, a bit less than his first year but he’s doing what he’s doing usually.”
“I’ve seen him missing sitters in his first season, in his second season and this season but where are the goals of Mahrez and Alvarez and Kevin [De Bruyne] is coming back and Gundogan also.”
Gundogan has scored just two goals for the Sky Blues this season while Riyad Mahrez bagged 15 goals in his final season at the Etihad Stadium.
However, Alvarez and Palmer have shown for Atletico Madrid and Chelsea respectively this campaign that they can be relied upon for goals.
COLE PALMER | MATCHES IN ALL COMPETITIONS | GOALS |
JULIAN ALVAREZ | 25 | 12 |
COLE PALMER | 19 | 11 |
Man City’s goalscoring stats must worry Guardiola
A look at the number of goals scored by each Manchester City player showcases that where one cannot disagree with Thierry Henry is that Haaland is far too relied upon by them for putting the ball in the back of the net.
MAN CITY PLAYER | GOALS IN ALL COMPETITIONS THIS SEASON |
ERLING HAALAND | 18 |
JOSKO GVARDIOL | 4 |
PHIL FODEN | 3 |
JOHN STONES | 3 |
JEREMY DOKU | 3 |
MATHEUS NUNES | 3 |
MATEO KOVACIC | 3 |
KEVIN DE BRUYNE | 2 |
ILKAY GUNDOGAN | 2 |
BERNARDO SILVA | 2 |
JAMES MCATEE | 1 |
Barring the Norwegian striker, no City player has even scored five goals in all competitions this campaign, yet reach double digits like he has.
For Manchester City to win either the league or the Champions League this campaign, the goals must be shared much more than they have been so far.
Manchester City’s attack has looked blunt for much of the season, potentially due to Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden being sidelined out of many games, a seeming struggle in creating chances and a potential fear in taking risks to avoid conceding turnovers on the break.
Whether Pep Guardiola agrees with Thierry Henry’s claim about his decisions in the transfer market, where he would agree with the Arsenal legend is the worrying lack of goals in his side.
