Yankuba Minteh has reacted to an announcement from Brighton on social media regarding defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Minteh joined Brighton from Newcastle in the summer for £30million [BBC Sport], in a deal largely motivated by profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

The two clubs were part of a strange transfer merry-go-round, which saw a number of teams sell players, mainly academy graduates, with the motivation to register profits on the accounting records to remain PSR compliant.

Since the move, Minteh has impressed for Brighton, scoring five goals and assisting three in 24 matches in the Premier League.

Having been demolished 7-0 by Nottingham Forest on 1 February, Brighton bounced back with three wins on the bounce against Chelsea, Southampton, and Bournemouth, only conceding once.

Going into March, the Seagulls carried on their good form, winning 2-1 against Fulham, thanks to a brilliant header from Van Hecke, before drawing 2-2 with reigning champions Man City.

Brighton now sit seventh, just one point behind the Citizens who occupy the last Champions League spot in fifth.

Van Hecke has been nominated for March’s Player of the Month award, whilst Fabian Hurzeler has been nominated for the managerial equivalent and Pervis Estupinan is up for the Goal of the Month award.

Brighton celebrated the achievement’s of their illustrious trio by posting a graphic on Instagram, captioned: “3 Albion nominees in March’s Premier League awards”.

Minteh showed support for both of his teammates and his manager, by liking the post.

Brighton a dark horse for Champions League qualification in Fabian Hurzeler’s first season

Football Insider Verdict

Bournemouth and Brentford’s managers, Andoni Iraola and Thomas Frank, have received plenty of plaudits this season, and rightly so.

The two clubs have massively outperformed expectations, with both teams playing disruptive attacking football.

However, Hurzeler’s Brighton have largely gone under-the-radar, in spit of the fact Brighton currently sit above both teams in the Premier League.

The Seagulls being a good footballing side has almost become an expectation in recent years, but it is easy to forget they took a risk in making the German the youngest permanent manager in Premier League history.

That risk has paid off as Brighton look set to qualify for Europe this year, whilst also still being in with a chance of winning their first ever major title, thanks to their qualification to the FA Cup quarter-finals.
