One of the stories of the summer transfer window was Newcastle United's failure to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Credit to the player, and this probably proves the type of character that he is, but he didn't make a fuss about it despite all the outside noise.

Newcastle had record bids turned down for Guehi, who excelled for England at Euro 2024 and now seems to be a regular starter for his country despite the change in management.

England beat Finland 3-1 in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday, with interim boss Lee Carsley bringing the Palace man back into the XI.

This comes after England's horror show against Greece, with the defence, in particular, coming under fire after being opened up again and again by a nation that didn't even qualify for the European Championships this summer.

Whilst the style of play still puts many fans to sleep, there was a sense of calmness and reliability at the back for the Three Lions in Helsinki.

Guehi plays a huge part in that and Ian Wright was keen to give the 24-year-old his flowers after the match.

The legendary striker expressed how he understands why Newcastle were keen on the hard-hitting defender because he is ‘very calm’ on the ball, as he told ITV Sport.

There is a reason why the Magpies were keen to throw record amounts of money on the table for the former Chelsea player and Wright listed the rising star’s attributes.

"You could see Newcastle's pursuit of him," stated Wright. "Kept going up and up and Palace in the end said no because they know what they mean to him.

"I think when you watch Marc Guehi, his positional sense, his technical play, his leadership qualities, he is very calm."

Will Newcastle look to sign Marc Guehi in the January transfer window?

Newcastle’s interest in Guehi remains ahead of the January transfer window, so it is one to watch out for because everyone now knows that they have a lot of money lying around.

The performances from Howe’s side have been mixed and perhaps they have been fortunate to get the points that they have during these early months of the campaign.

But only seven goals conceded after seven matches is pretty good, especially a backline that has been chopped and changed this term.

If Newcastle manage to get Guehi, added with the return of Sven Botman in 2025, then the second half of the season could prove to be very interesting for the team.
