Wigan Athletic could be set for another rebuild of their squad this summer and they will be looking to do some shrewd business.

Wigan Athletic have had a poor campaign this season but are preparing themselves for another year in the third tier. New WAFC boss Ryan Lowe will be assessing his squad game by game looking for who to build around for the next campaign.

Lowe’s Latics side are not yet mathematically safe and have just a six-point gap to the drop zone. However, with two games in hand over 21st-placed Burton Albion, they should be safe before the season ends.

They will be looking to go again next season nonetheless. A return to the Championship will be the aim over the next season or two and under Lowe, Wigan Athletic have a boss who can produce such a feat.

With that in mind, here are three prospects with expiring contracts who the Latics should have their eyes on…

Tyler Onyango

Onyango is a promising young player who has all the attributes to succeed in the game. However, across three loan spells in League One, he has not yet made a real impression.

Wigan Athletic could be a good home for the tall midfielder, who will no doubt have plenty of suitors in the EFL. Onyango was with the play-off-chasing Stockport County earlier this campaign.

He also has five appearances for Everton under his belt so the ability is there and with a run in the side at Wigan Athletic, he could be a tidy addition.

Oli Bainbridge

Bainbridge has been training with Sunderland’s first-team in the second half of this campaign. He started the season on loan at Scottish side Kilmarnock, making six league appearances and a further two in the UEFA Conference League.

The left-back has clear potential but at 20 years old he has not broke through on Wearside yet. Dropping down a level could be perfect for the defender.

Wigan Athletic could be a perfect option for Bainbridge.

Jay Turner-Cooke

Turner-Cooke is a very versatile young player who left Sunderland for Newcastle United back in 2021. Since joining the Magpies, he has had two loan spells with Tranmere Rovers and St. Johnstone.

However, at 21, he has not yet made his mark of the professional game. With an exit likely this summer, he will no doubt be looking at an EFL move.

Wigan Athletic would be making a tidy addition to their squad by picking up Turner-Cooke.
